You are invited to participate in a research study titled “Understanding Parents’ Motivation to Protect Their Children from AI-Generated Non-Consensual Intimate Imagery”. This study is being conducted by Dr. Yvette Wohn, Principal Investigator and Associate Professor in the Department of Informatics at the New Jersey Institute of Technology (NJIT).

TITLE OF STUDY
Understanding Parents’ Motivation to Protect Their Children from AI-Generated Non-Consensual Intimate Imagery
I have been asked to participate in a research study which is being conducted by Dr. Yvette Wohn, Associate Professor in the Department of Informatics at the New Jersey Institute of Technology.
PURPOSE
The aim of this survey is to understand parents’ motivation to protect their children from AI-generated non-consensual intimate imagery.
DURATION
My participation in this study will last for approximately 15 minutes. I have been told that my participation in this research study is important for the success of the research and that the results of this research study are expected to produce the following benefits to society and for me as a subject.
ELIGIBILITY CRITERIA
Participants must be parents or legal guardians of at least one child. Eligible participants should be 18 years of age or older, able to read and understand English, and currently in the US.
BENEFITS FOR SOCIETY AND THE SUBJECT
The findings from this work will contribute to the development of AI technologies. As such, by participating in this study, my perspectives will contribute to the design of emerging technologies.
PROCEDURES
This survey will be conducted online through a secure surveys platform; participants can complete the survey from any location with internet access; during the course of this study, the following will occur:

I will be asked to answer questions about AI Literacy and AI-generated non-consensual intimate imagery.

The survey is confidential, and my participation is voluntary.

It should take approximately 15 minutes to complete.

I retain the right to refuse to answer any questions that make me feel uncomfortable.
PARTICIPANTS
I will be one of about 300 participants in this study.
EXCLUSIONS
I will inform the researcher if any of the following apply to me:

I am under 18 years old.

I have a conflict of interest in the outcomes of this study.

I am unable to give informed consent.

I am unable to read English.
RISKS/DISCOMFORTS
I have been told that the study described above may involve the following risks and/or discomforts: some questions may evoke personal memories or feelings. There also may be risks and discomfort that are not yet known. I know I can skip any questions I find uncomfortable.
I fully recognize that there are risks that I may be exposed to by volunteering in this study which are inherent in participating in any study; I understand that I am not covered by NJIT’s insurance policy for any injury or loss I might sustain in the course of participating in the study.
CONFIDENTIALITY
I understand confidential information is not the same as anonymous. Confidential means that my name will not be disclosed if there exists a documented linkage between my identity and my responses as recorded in the research records. Every effort will be made to maintain the confidentiality of my study records. If the findings from the study are published, I will not be identified by name. My identity will remain confidential unless disclosure is required by law.
PAYMENT FOR PARTICIPATION
I have been told that I will not receive any compensation for this study.
RIGHT TO REFUSE OR WITHDRAW
I understand that my participation is voluntary and I may refuse to participate, or may discontinue my participation at any time with no adverse consequence. I also understand that the investigator has the right to withdraw me from the study at any time.
